Drug task force arrests trio

Franklin County sheriff’s deputies began an investigation Oct. 8 into an alleged sexual misconduct complaint involving a juvenile, reported Franklin County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Jason Lovins. It was found that possible drug activity was occurring at the Garrett Simmons residence, 26106 Sanes Creek Road, Laurel.

Franklin County Drug Task Force officers were contacted and a search warrant was sought for the property.  On Oct. 9, they executed a search warrant there. About 10 pounds of marijuana was located as well as marijuana growing supplies, according to Lovins. 

Several controlled substances were also located, but are pending identification. 

Three men were arrested and charged: Alvin Eden, 52, Rushville, cultivating marijuana over 30 grams, dealing in marijuana and possession of a controlled substance, Class D felonies; Garrett Simmons, 34, maintaining a common nuisance and possession of a controlled substance, Class D felonies; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor; David Thompson, 49, Laurel, visiting a common nuisance, a Class B misdemeanor.

If convicted, a Class D felony carries a sentence of six months to three years in the Department of Corrections, with fines up to $10,000; a Class A misdemeanor carries a sentence of up to one year in jail and fines up to $5,000; and a Class B misdemeanor carries a sentence of up to 180 days, and fines up to $1,000. 

The investigation into the alleged sexual misconduct is continuing, said Lovins.

The task force relies on tips from the public. Anyone with information should contact the Drug Tip Hot line at 765-647-0755.  Information can also be emailed to taskforce2442@yahoo.com.  Officers may need to obtain additional information and understand that anonymity is very important.  No information will be shared or released.

The Franklin County Drug Task Force is a multi-agency narcotics task force based in Brookville.  It is comprised of sworn law enforcement officers from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana State Police, Brookville Police Department, Indiana Conservation Department Batesville Police Department. The main objectives of the task force are the investigation of individuals and organizations involved in narcotics trafficking, seizure of assets acquired through narcotics trafficking, and promotion of coordinated narcotics enforcement efforts among various county law enforcement agencies. 

The drug task force, through the combined efforts of local, state and federal agencies, will actively pursue those groups or individuals who manufacture, distribute or sell illegal drugs within Franklin County. It functions as an extension of all law enforcement agencies within the county.
