New Point robbery suspect in custody

GREENSBURG — A collaborative effort by multiple Decatur County Sheriff’s deputies Friday night resulted in the arrest of a man whom authorities believe robbed a New Point convenience store last month.

According to Charging Information filed in the Decatur Circuit Court Monday, Carl “C.J.” Louis Moore Jr., 21, of South County Road 820 East in New Point, faces charges of robbery and attempted robbery stemming from two separate incidents said to have occurred recently at the New Point Food Mart. Both charges are class “C” felonies.

Moore was located and taken into custody Friday night following a call from a clerk at the New Point Food Mart to the Sheriff’s Department and Greensburg Police Department claiming an armed robbery had just taken place at the store. The call was received by dispatchers at approximately 10:01 p.m.

The caller, identified in police reports as Chinton Patel, a clerk at the store, told police a male subject wearing a mask, a hooded sweatshirt, baggy pants and gloves had entered the store and demanded Patel place money into a blue bag held by the suspect. The suspect is alleged to have made a motion with his hands within the jacket that led the clerk to believe the suspect was carrying a weapon.

Surveillance videos reportedly show the clerk running from the counter while the suspect moves toward the cash register and attempts to open it. Unsuccessful in opening the register or obtaining any money, the suspect fled the store on a bicycle.

Investigators with the sheriff’s department responded to a similar incident at the same location March 12. At that time, an individual dressed similarly to the one shown in the April 5 video entered the store and handed Chinton Patel a note that read, “Give me the money.” Patel told investigators he believed the suspect was carrying a knife. The suspect in that incident took what was initially reported to be $1,764 but later found to be $2,140 in cash from the store, which he had placed into a blue bag before escaping on foot.
