Bands highlight Sunman fire fest

“We have some really good bands to entertain the crowd” during the June 13-14 Sunman Rural Fire Department Firemen’s Festival, reports Chief Bill Craig.

“We had a group of firemen who went out and recruited some really good entertainment,” he reveals. On Friday, the York Ridge Boys and 90 Proof Twang will perform (please see box for times). Then on Saturday night, the Austin Tyler Lee Band will take the stage, followed by Anthony Orio and the Goodfellers.

The latter group is “a headliner in Nashville, Tennessee, and they opened for Jason Aldean. They are traveling from Louisville before going back to Tennessee and had this date open .... We’ve been told to expect a huge crowd for this band.”

The music “is going to be festive. It’s going to have a beat to it and will be enjoyable for all ages.”

Food will also be a big draw. SRFD auxiliary members will serve smoked pork chop dinners Friday night. The meals include pork chops, scalloped potatoes, macaroni and cheese, green beans, coleslaw, roll, applesauce, dessert and a drink.

Fried chicken dinners with mashed potatoes, corn, coleslaw, applesauce, roll, dessert and a drink are on the menu Saturday. The meals are $10. There will also be a lunch stand for those wanting lighter fare.

On Saturday, the annual parade begins at 1 p.m. Participants, who do not have to preregister, can start lining up at noon at the Sunman Elementary School parking lot. The procession will travel south on Main Street, then turn east on Eastern Avenue into the Sunman American Legion parking lot.

Youngsters will enjoy bounce houses and a collection of kids’ games. Other attractions for the adults include a softball tournament and beer garden.

Raffle winners of cash prizes, with a grand prize of $500, will be announced Saturday night. Tickets costing $1 each or seven for $5 can be purchased from firefighters or at the fest.
