The Batesville Main Street organization is moving forward.
About 30 supporters attended the April 9 meeting at the Sherman House to hear Shae Kmicikewycz, Indiana Main Street, Indianapolis, program manager, give an overview of suggested committees and talk about ways to be successful.
The mission of Indiana Main Street is to encourage economic development, redevelopment and improvement of the downtown areas of Hoosier cities and towns.
“You are part of 118 communities .... (and) you have this great network of others across the state you can contact.” She pointed out, “If you have a problem that you think might sound unique to you, I can assure you there is at least one more community that is dealing with the same thing.”
She stressed the concept of “R and D, rob and duplicate. Why recreate everything? You are part of this big family. As you get started in the process, this is a great way to re-energize.”
She discussed details of each committee in which persons can be involved. “Organization, that’s the board. I hope we have people interested in serving on it. It’s not scary. It’s a really great opportunity to guide the organization into the future. It’s the most important aspect, the sustainability piece.”
Design includes “storefront renovations, landscaping, flowers, hanging baskets, murals. It’s all about the physical appearance of the downtown, where you really roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty .... the sky’s the limit.”
Those wanting to be involved in promotion will “take a look at what is already downtown. What businesses are there and how can you do cross promotions? It’s taking advantage of events already planned downtown and deciding how you can do a better job of promoting them and even create new ones.
“The big focus of the economic restructuring committee will be looking at ‘How can we fill those storefronts? What do we have that we can provide future businesses owners and retain existing businesses?’ Members will really look at all the pieces in the downtown.”
