Owner Timothy Beck reported a blaze at his 11961 Delaware Road home Sunday, March 10, at 5:46 p.m., according to Batesville Fire and Rescue Department Chief Todd Schutte.
When he and 16 other Batesville firefighters arrived, they saw “a lot of smoke, then it turned into a lot of fire.” Beck, his wife and kids safely evacuated the house.
Personnel from neighboring fire departments in Morris, Napoleon, Sunman, Delaware and Oldenburg were called in to help fight the blaze.
“It was a typical house fire,” Schutte said. “We were busy – a lot of people working their butts off trying to get it out.”
The brick house was a total loss. Schutte set the initial damage estimate at around $450,000.
No one was injured.
Batesville firefighters returned to the station at 11:41 p.m.
When asked about the fire’s cause, the chief answered, “It’s still under investigation. We just need to go back out and look at the site.” Schutte expected to do that Monday afternoon.
