— Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corp.’s financial situation has greatly improved over the past few years.

By the end of the year, “we will be about $1.5 million in the black for the general fund,” reported superintendent Dr. Jeff Hendrix. Two years ago, the district had a $2.5 million deficit.

He said trustees approved a 2 percent raise for support staff and administrators Dec. 13. They also lifted the pay freeze for noncertified staff members.

A resolution to refinance the $38 million in bonds from East Central High School’s renovation to get a lower interest rate was approved. “We hope to save taxpayers some money ... The goal is to get a savings of $2 million or more. If that doesn’t happen, we will hold them until the market improves,” Hendrix revealed.

Brenda Osman, ECHS family and consumer science teacher, and Mandy Copenhaver, SDCSC food services director, updated the group on the Fuel Up to Play 60 grant. The $2,000 grant helped fund a Vitamix smoothie machine for the high school, which will be a great addition, the superintendent added.
