GREENSBURG — A Greensburg boy has died following a shooting at his home on North Carver Street Tuesday evening.
Following notification of family members, Decatur County Coroner Charity Banks confirmed that Craig Roberts, 13, of 1031 North Carver Street, died Tuesday from a gunshot wound sustained at his residence.
Greensburg Police were dispatched to the scene of a shooting at the home at approximately 5:43 p.m. Tuesday, Greensburg Police Detective Bill Meyerrose said. The victim was pronounced dead at Decatur County Memorial Hospital.
Meyerrose told the Daily News late Tuesday that the investigation is close to being completed. He confirmed Craig Roberts, a student at Greensburg Junior High School, died of a single gunshot wound. The shooting appeared to be accidental, the detective said.
An autopsy was expected to be scheduled at some point Wednesday in Marion County.
Meyerrose said crime scene technicians with the Indiana State Police assisted at the scene. Further assistance came from the Decatur County Sheriff's Department, Greensburg Fire Department, Decatur County Coroner and Decatur County EMS.
Meyerrose said he anticipated the investigation would be concluded at some point Wednesday afternoon.
Neither Meyerrose nor Banks were ready to publicly discuss details of the incident Tuesday night.
On behalf of the Greensburg Police Department, Meyerrose urged parents to keep any and all firearms in a safe place, locked away from children.
