Sifting through 87 inspection reports really shows the variety of retail food establishments in Franklin County.
When Franklin County Health Department sanitarian David Fehlinger performed surprise inspections during the six months between Oct. 1, 2013, and March 31, he reported 40 had no violations, 30 exhibited noncritical problems and just 17 had critical (the most serious) findings.
Forty-six percent had no problems, more than the 39 percent in 2013’s third quarter, but less than the 64 percent in its second quarter. On the food safety honor roll are Batesville High School, Batesville Primary School, Dotty’s Bulk Food Basket, Hampton Inn, KTS Foodmart, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut and Shopko, Batesville; Oldenburg Academy, The Kessing Haus Cafe, The Village Store and Wagner’s Village Inn, Oldenburg.
Also, Amish Cheese House, Grannie’s Cookie Jars, Mr. Fudge’s Confectionery, The Cat & the Fiddle at The Thorpe House, The Cowboy Grill and The Smelly Gourmet, Metamora; Laurel Cafe, Laurel Elementary and Middle School and The Laurel Hotel, Laurel; Alco, Brook Hill Golf Club, Brookville Elementary School, Brookville Ice Co., Brookville Middle School, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Franklin County High School, Lakeside Exxon, Lovin’ Spoonful, Mount Carmel Elementary School, Rileybrook Hall, Rosenberger’s Main Meat Market, Save-A-Lot, Smole Knows General Store, St. Michael School, The Hermitage (bed-and-breakfast) and White’s Flea Market, Brookville; Beebe Marathon, Cedar Grove.
Two sites had six noncritical problems. Both Hav-A-Bite Restaurant, Metamora, and The Dairy Cottage, Brookville, had salad prep station dirty fan covers, grease dripping from ventilation hoods and no hair restraints worn. The first also had holes in walls, unshielded lights and dirty salt, pepper and condiment containers. The second also exhibited mold on ceiling, fan covers and cooler pipes; chicken blood on walk-in floor; and dirty door handles.
Five NC items were discovered at Ye Olde Shack, Brookville; and China Wok, Batesville, which had dust on ceiling vents and dirty soy sauce containers, microwave, and ice cream freezer, walk-in refrigerator and freezer door handles.
