OTC members discuss safety measures

Oldenburg Town Council members are working on putting some safety measures in place.

In August, a citizen whose daughter and grandkids live near Gilbert Munchel Memorial Park, located between Pearl Street and St. Joseph Alley, expressed concern for those kids and others who play and ride their bikes around that area because cars speed by. He wondered if speed bumps could be put in the alley to slow them down.

On Oct. 7, member Greg Struewing said the removable speed bumps have been purchased, “but I don’t think we should put them down until next year.”

President Dave Wahman agreed because “they wouldn’t hold through the winter “ because the snowplows would tear them up.

Struewing also noted that making the intersection at Pearl and Vine streets, which is near the park, a four-way stop “definitely has slowed traffic down.”

Members will also be acting on another request from a citizen, who wanted a yellow stripe to be painted down the middle of Indiana Avenue, which is a short section of road between Water Street and St. Mary’s Road going southeast out of town. She was concerned about drivers going around the curve in the middle of the road.

They purchased a striping machine and Struewing and member Dennis Moeller will paint it as soon as possible.
