Milan team will be honored at Hinkle Sunday

The 1954 Milan High School basketball state championship team will be honored Sunday, Feb. 23, during the Butler vs. Providence men’s game to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the “Milan Miracle.” Game tip-off is at 6 p.m., according to alumna Sally Wirthwein, Indianapolis, who is organizing the recognition ceremony.

The team will be honored on the same court at Hinkle Fieldhouse (then Butler Fieldhouse) where they claimed the championship in a classic David vs. Goliath tilt that thrilled an entire state and served as the inspiration for the iconic sports movie “Hoosiers.” Currently scheduled to attend are Milan team members Bobby Plump, Ray Craft, Rollin Cutter, Roger Schroder and Gene White; Mary Lou Wood, the late coach Marvin Wood’s wife; and cheerleader Jinky Craft. They will be available to greet the public during the game's halftime.

The day has also been designated Milan Community Day, and area residents are encouraged to join the celebration. Discounted tickets can be purchased online at https://butlergroupsales.com/milan/. They can also be purchased at the door.

A fan bus will be available at no charge for area residents who want to go to the game. It will leave from the Milan High School parking lot at 3 p.m. Sunday. To reserve a bus seat, persons should call the Ripley County Tourism Bureau at 812-689-7431 by noon Friday.

Plump, Craft and Cutter all went on to play for Butler University under the legendary coach Tony Hinkle. On Jan. 26, it was announced a Bobby Plump Ramp will be designated in the fieldhouse to commemorate his career both as a Milan and Butler player after a $50,000 gift from a combined 13 donors to the Hinkle Fieldhouse Campaign was received.
