Citizens can honor two military heroes Aug. 24

The Indiana State Police and numerous local public safety agencies in Brown, Bartholomew, Jennings and Jefferson counties will be assisting the Patriot Guard Riders with an official military escort Saturday, Aug. 24.

"The procession will be escorting the remains of two Marine Corps veterans who happen to be uncle and nephew," reports ISP Sgt. Noel Houze, Versailles District public information officer.

The uncle, Pfc. Manley Winkley, was born in Indianapolis Sept. 17, 1923, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, when he was killed in action on the island of Betio Nov. 20, 1943, during the Battle of Tarawa. He was buried in a battlefield cemetery on Betio. From Oct. 29-Nov. 8, 2012, a Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command Team found the human remains of at least three individuals there. On April 2, the remains of one was positively identified as Winkley. Houze points out, "After nearly 70 years on foreign soil where he gave his life for our country, his remains are being brought back to the United States for burial and full military honors."

Winkley's nephew, Cpl. Lyman Winkley, was born in Indianapolis Feb. 11, 1927. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on Dec. 11, 1944, and was honorably discharged May 28, 1947. His military records from World War II were damaged in the St. Louis fire so there is no record of where he served or with what company. Lyman Winkley re-enlisted in the Marine Corps Aug. 24, 1950, and was in the 1st Marine Division during the Korean War Battle of Chosin Reservoir. He was wounded in Yo-Dong March 22, 1951, and again April 25, 1951, in central Korea. He received the Korean Service Medal with one bronze service star and the Purple Heart with one gold star. He was honorably discharged Sept. 4, 1951.

Citizens are "encouraged to show their support for these two military heroes by lining streets and roadways along the route of travel," according to Houze.

The military escort will leave Bond Mitchell Funeral Home, Nashville, at 11 a.m. and travel to the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Madison, arriving at about 1 p.m. Then the remains of both Winkleys will be interred with full military honors.

The route: south on State Road 135 to S.R. 46, east on S.R. 46 into Columbus, south on S.R. 7 (State Street) from Columbus through North Vernon to Madison.
