Prescription drug disposal sites detailed

— At the Coalition for a Drug-Free Batesville Jan. 7 meeting, members discussed the need for area residents to get rid of unused or expired prescription medications before they fall into the wrong hands. “People don’t understand they cannot legally use someone else’s prescription,” noted Geralyn Litzinger, Margaret Mary Community Hospital community health director.

Police Chief Stan Holt reported, “There are a lot that are dropped off at the department.”

The Southeastern Indiana Recycling District has provided pharmaceutical waste disposal bins to police agencies within its seven-county area, says public outreach coordinator Kendal Miller. Controlled and noncontrolled medications can be disposed of 24/7 in the Batesville Police Department lobby, 104 E. Catherine St.; Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, 210 N. Monroe St., Versailles; and Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, 371 Main St., Brookville. No questions will be asked.

Needles and sharps should be disposed of at Margaret Mary Community Hospital, 321 Mitchell Ave., Batesville; or the Ripley County Health Department, 102 W. First North St., Versailles. Needles and lancets can be brought to the Franklin County Health Department, 1010 Franklin Ave., Brookville. The departments are open weekdays from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Additional information on SEIRD services and educational programs can be found at www.seird.org or by contacting Miller at 800-997-4793.
