---- — The Ninth Annual Oktoberfest is Friday-Saturday, Oct. 4-5, at St. Leon American Legion Post 464.

“We are adding sauerkraut balls and reuben sandwiches to the menu,” notes committee member Al Hartman. In addition, there will be a new band Saturday night, Squeeze Play. “They have about a dozen people with accordions.”

A fish fry takes place Friday evening, and persons can also show their talents at karaoke. On Saturday, pork chop and chicken dinners will be served. There will also be a pie auction and reverse raffle. “If you buy a $50 raffle ticket (only 300 will be sold), you get a free dinner.”

Oktoberfest started over 200 years ago when the emperor of Germany had a wedding for his daughter in October. This fest became a tradition each year. It continues at St. Leon, which was founded in the early 1800s by German immigrants who prospered in agriculture. At the end of the harvest, they would have a fest, which later became known as Oktoberfest, he notes.

The family-friendly fest “is a good time to celebrate the season of Autumn .... What we try to do is create an atmosphere of celebration. We want people to come and have fun and go back and tell their friends,” Hartman stresses.

Proceeds fund American Legion and other community activities.
