---- — Dave Record has been donating blood for the past 40 years.

After his most recent donation Sept. 3, he received a nice surprise, a $1,000 Macy’s gift card.

“Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati, recently held a Back-to-School Shopping Spree promotion in which all blood donors Aug. 30-Sept. 4 were automatically registered to win” one of four $1,000 gift cards, reports Alecia Lipton, Hoxworth community relations manager.

Record reveals he started attending these drives because “I wanted to help people .... I donate four to five times per year. Because people are always in need of blood, I am always willing to help. I encourage others to donate, especially those with a rare blood type.”

The Batesville resident admits, “When I initially heard about winning the Macy’s gift card, my wife and I thought it was a hoax. There was no sign-up or drawing at the (Sunman American) Legion where I donated. I called Roger Lang, the person in charge of the blood drive, and called Hoxworth to verify.

“We were very excited when we realized that we had won. Much will be used toward Christmas. (Wife) Gloria and I are very thankful.”

Lipton adds, “We would like to thank Mr. Record for his lifesaving blood donation and congratulate him on winning the gift card. We also thank the Sunman American Legion for hosting a successful blood drive that collected 29 units and will be used to help save up to 87 lives.”

Persons interested in donating blood must be at least 17 (16 with a signed parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and feel good with no signs of cold or flu, she notes. They should “eat a good meal at least four hours prior to donation and drink plenty of fluids – water, no caffeine – before and after donation.”

Two blood drives are scheduled over the next few weeks in Batesville: Wednesday, Oct. 9, from noon-5:30 p.m. at Batesville Knights of Columbus Hall (sponsored by St. Louis Catholic Church). No appointments taken; and Tuesday, Oct. 15, 8-11 a.m. and 12:15-2 p.m., in the bus in the Margaret Mary Health parking lot. Appointments may be made at 933-5274.
