---- — Southeastern Indiana will be alive with the sound of music during the 25th annual Versailles State Park Bluegrass Festival Oct. 5-6.

“It’s a great time for families to gather and hear bluegrass bands from all over the region. Children can play in the field, take a boat ride on the lake or hike the hills as the music plays and echoes throughout the valley,” says Katherine Taul, Ripley County Tourism Bureau executive director.

The cost is $5 per person per day plus the park gate fee, $5 for vehicles with Indiana license plates and $7 for out-of-state vehicles.

Guests should bring “lawn chairs, an appetite for good vendor food, cash for T-shirts or band CDs and something warm to wear in case the weather is cool, since it’s outdoors.”

A variety of food and drink choices is available, including pork loin sandwiches, fried apples, lemon shake-ups and other snacks. No alcohol is allowed in the park.

There is also a Friday night jam session (please see box). “A crowd has been gathering the last two years at the Welcome Center (220 E. U.S. 50), Versailles, to play bluegrass music. Some band members and some just lovers of bluegrass come together to enjoy a time to pick and sing. Bring a lawn chair.”

Taul encourages the public to attend the fest because “it’s a wonderful, peaceful weekend to enjoy live music from all over the region and beyond for not much money.

“This will be the last year for the festival at Versailles State Park. It’s going to be even bigger and better in Friendship Oct. 4-5, 2014, so watch for information on the Friendship Music Festival.”
