After a written challenge was filed April 30 by Linda Hall and Ben Hiatt, Franklin County West Harrison residents and precinct committeepersons, the county election board met May 3 to address it, according to Secretary Karla Bauman.
The letter stated, "We are filing a challenge to the disclaimer on Barry Bischoff's election sign. We are asking for documented proof that the sign was indeed paid for by the Franklin County Republican Central Committee, as stated on the sign. As active members of the Franklin County Republican Party, we have no knowledge of the use of party funds to support a Republican candidate in a contested race during this primary election. It is our desire to diligently follow election laws."
Bauman said the initial consensus of the election board members was "there was no violation." The state Election Division attorneys for the Republican and Democratic parties were contacted, but neither one responded in time for the meeting.
On May 4, the state attorneys from both parties notified members and agreed no election laws were violated, she reported.
Members did pass the information along to county prosecuting attorney Mel Wilhelm, and he will review it, Bauman revealed.
