A man who scammed an elderly Batesville couple has been arrested, reports Batesville Police Chief Stan Holt.
In March,a male suspect, who appeared to be a stranded motorist in need of assistance, had scammed the couple out of money then stole a wallet from them that contained several credit cards, money and other personal information. There were similar reports made to neighboring law enforcement agencies by complainants that described the same scamming technique used by the suspect.
After a lengthy investigation led by Batesville Detective Blake Roope, police developed a suspect, Michael Chad O'Toole, Cincinnati. The Batesville Police Department, with the assistance of the Harrison, Ohio, Police Department and Hamilton County, Ohio, Sheriff's Office, gathered enough information to identify O'Toole as the culprit involved in the theft from the Batesville couple.
A formal charge of theft, a Class D felony, was filed against him by Ripley County prosecutor Ric Hertel.
O'Toole is being held inside a Hamilton County correctional facility awaiting extradition to Indiana to face charges stemming from the Batesville incident.
