BATESVILLE — Thanks to the quick action of area firefighters, two blazes were put out quickly April 23.
About 2:23 p.m., the Batesville Fire Department responded to 1280 Tekulve Road, the Sarringhaus residence, reported Chief Todd Schutte.
Someone was mowing grass and the muffler bumped up against round hay bales and caught them on fire. "There were about 20-30 bales all stacked together .... We got the fire knocked down in less than a half hour, but the long part was taking the bales apart. It's a lot of work to tear them apart and water them down. We were out there until about 5:10 p.m."
In addition to 11 firefighters responding from Batesville, Morris and Oldenburg brought about 20 additional volunteers. Schutte emphasized, "I appreciated their support."
About a half hour after arriving on the scene, Batesville firefighters were called out to 1087 S. County Line Road for a field fire. Persons were burning brush, and the wind blew embers into the field. It was put out swiftly, the chief noted.
He encouraged community members to "be careful and conscious of your surroundings."
