A fatal crash occurred Sunday, Feb. 2, on Bath Road about one-fourth mile west of Harmony Road in Bath Township, reported Franklin County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Jason Lovins, the investigating officer.
At 8:40 a.m. a 2000 Dodge Intrepid operated by Marion Ponder, 88, Bath, was traveling west "when the driver lost control of the vehicle on the icy road," Lovins said. The car went off of the road's south side. Ponder overcorrected, causing the Intrepid to spin on the ice, into the path of an oncoming 2000 GMC Sierra 2500, also eastbound and driven by Jeffrey Coffey, 43, West College Corner.
Coffey stated that he observed the out-of-control Intrepid and attempted to stop his vehicle, but was unable to due to the road conditions. The GMC made direct impact with the Intrepid's driver’s side.
Ponder was pronounced dead at the scene by the Franklin County coroner. Coffey was transported by Franklin County EMS to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital, Oxford, Ohio.
The crash is still under investigation, said Lovins, who also was assisted by FCSD Officer Bo Staat, Union County Sheriff’s Department Officer Dale Dishmond, Rescue 24 and the West College Corner Volunteer Fire Department.
