Straight A's for Batesville schools

All four Batesville public schools were among 502 in Indiana, or 56.3 percent, that earned A’s in 2013 and accomplished that feat two years in a row, said a Dec. 20 Indiana Center for Education and Career Innovation news release.

On that date, the Indiana State Board of Education approved final grades for Indiana schools, which were submitted by the Indiana Department of Education to fulfill federal and state accountability requirements for the 2012-13 school year, according to an ISBE news release.

Superintendent Dr. Jim Roberts said, “The Batesville Community School Corp. is proud to once again receive straight A’s from the Indiana Department of Education.”

“These grades ... are reflective of the outstanding year achieved by our school corporation. The IDOE previously recognized each of our schools as 4-Star Schools. Our ISTEP+ scores for students in grades 3-8 were ranked No. 1 in the southern part of the state and No. 6 in the state of Indiana overall. The College Board Advanced Placement Program named our corporation to its Third Annual Honor Roll for being placed in the top 4 percent nationally for students scoring a 3 or better on an AP examination.”

He added that three of the four Batesville public schools received Gold Ratings from the Indiana Action for Healthy Kids Healthy School Awards program. Only nine Hoosier schools in Indiana earned that distinction.

Roberts reflected, “We have outstanding staff members, excellent parents, tremendous students and an active and supportive community. We are grateful for each of these groups and express our thanks for another job well done.”

Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corp. 2013 grades fluctuated. One school’s designation remained stable at A, three increased and two decreased. Superintendent Dr. Jeff Hendrix did not respond to a request for comments.

The ISBE report pointed out, “Indiana schools saw improvement over the prior school year, with 67 percent of all schools receiving an A or B grade (up from 62 percent in 2012), and 10 percent more earning A’s than last year. In public schools, 65 percent were A’s or B’s in 2013, up from 58 percent in 2012. The percentage of public schools with D’s or F’s decreased from 20 percent in 2012 to 16 percent in 2013.”
