Published November 14, 2008 01:50 pm - Timothy Putnam has been appointed the new Margaret Mary Community Hospital president and chief executive officer, said board Chairman Melanie Riehle.

MMCH names new president

Timothy Putnam has been appointed the new Margaret Mary Community Hospital president and chief executive officer, said board Chairman Melanie Riehle.

Putnam replaces James Amos, who has held the position since 1987 and will retire Jan. 26, 2009.

The new leader will join MMCH in mid-January, allowing the two leaders time to work together and make a smooth transition for the organization, according to communications specialist Becky Walter.

"Finding a replacement for Jim Amos was no easy task considering his impressive leadership and significant contributions over the past 21 years," noted Riehle. "Jim’s vision, leadership abilities and organizational skills have resulted in MMCH being known as a facility for its premier quality of care. The board was committed to continuing the hospital’s focus on exceptional quality and service and we believe Mr. Putnam is ideally qualified to do just that."

The incoming president has served as the chief executive officer for Mercer County Hospital, a 39-bed critical access facility in Aledo, Ill., since 2003. Putnam holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Southern Indiana and is currently working on his doctorate of health administration degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He is also an American College of Healthcare Executives Fellow.

"Mr. Putnam has proven experience in rural health care, which should match well with our hospital and our community. He understands the unique role of community hospitals and the importance of strong community partnerships," added the board chairman. "His experience, leadership traits and personal goals will complement Margaret Mary Community Hospital’s vision for the future."

In addition to Mercer County Hospital, Putnam’s professional experience also includes director positions in ambulatory care services, emergency services and advanced surgery at Ascension Health at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville; as well as positions at the Georgia Laser Center, Rome, Ga.; and Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati. In total, he brings 25 years of health care experience that includes financial management, program development, physician recruitment and strategic planning.

Putnam has also been active in various community service organizations and economic development initiatives on the local and state levels. He and his wife, Sara, have been married 24 years and have four daughters.

According to Riehle, "A nationwide search was conducted by a firm specializing in health care executives and there were many outstanding candidates. The board of directors believes Tim Putnam is the best selection for continuing the legacy of quality care and service excellence that Jim Amos has developed during his 21-plus years at MMCH. Although we will certainly miss Jim’s remarkable leadership, we are confident Tim’s experience and enthusiasm will further enhance our organization and poise Margaret Mary Community Hospital for continued future success."
