The field of 11 talented young ladies was narrowed down to one when Kathryn Sidell was crowned Miss Ripley County July 12 on the Damm Theater, Osgood, stage.

It is “a great honor, and I feel wonderful ... (and) just amazing,” the Batesville resident admitted. When she was asked her onstage question, “What advice would you give to teenage girls who are never satisfied with the way they look?” the daughter of Larry and Tammy Sidell responded, “Look inside yourself .... no matter what I look like on the outside, it’s important what’s on the inside.”

The St. Mary-of-the-Woods College sophomore, who is studying to become an equine veterinarian, is looking forward to the week of the fair because “I just love it.”

The 10-year 4-H member has been involved in the St. Mary-of-the-Woods Equestrian Team, Indiana Riders Association and Indiana Horse Council.

First runner-up was Brittany Bauman, who was “overwhelmed ... (and) so excited because I am on the court with a bunch of my friends.” The daughter of Rick and Marcia Bauman, Sunman, revealed that Christmas is her favorite holiday. “We get all the family together. It’s a nice day to relax and have fun.”

Second runner-up Brittany Joseph was asked, “If you could interview anyone in the world, who would it be?” The daughter of William and Shanna Joseph, Holton, responded, “Barack Obama .... I would like to know how he’s going to get things done with the country.”

Third runner-up D.J. Hosmer, daughter of Randy and Tracy Bauman, Sunman, wanted to be involved in the pageant to “make new friends and do something different.”

Fourth runner-up Tanaha Simon, daughter of Michael and Janice Simon, Osgood, announced that reading is her favorite activity. It “gives me a chance to go into a new world and use my imagination.”

Julie Hoffrogge was named Miss Congeniality. The daughter of Donald and Diane Hoffrogge, Dillsboro, was excited about this honor and noted, “I’m glad everyone thinks of me the way they do.”

Kristen Duerstock, daughter of Kevin and Catherine Duerstock, Batesville, was named the People’s Choice winner after attendees voted with cash. Two contestants also received plaques for their modeling abilities. Hosmer won for professional wear and Vicki Woulms, daughter of Todd and Ann Woulms, Milan, for formal wear.

Throughout the week of the fair, July 19-25, the queen and her court will hand out ribbons and be present at various events.
