St. Leon addresses quad issue

ST. LEON – St. Leon Marshal Bill Wendt announced April 2 he has received many complaints concerning drivers of quad runners speeding through town and performing dangerous stunts. He said, “They are jeopardizing themselves and other people’s lives.” Town council members have also received calls at home.

“Some have been popping wheelies in front of my yard with passengers on the back,” reported member Jerry Stenger. “They’re very reckless.”

Wendt noted these vehicles are not legal on the roads except for farm use. However, he has no problem with them if the operators obey the speed limit and other laws, carry insurance and stay off private property.

Yet this has not been the case in some instances because the four-wheelers have been driven through fields. “I’ve seen them pull out in front of cars back on my road,” Stenger mentioned.

“We tried being nice,” Wendt stated, and some people are still not following the law. Therefore, those who continue to cause trouble will be cited and their vehicles will be towed and impounded.

President Doug Farrow encouraged residents to continue to report violations. “If Bill is not here, call Dearborn County” Sheriff’s Department.

The marshal declared, “If you’re riding a quad down the road (obeying the laws), we’re not going to hassle you, but if you’re driving while intoxicated or going 50 or 60 (miles per hour) down the road, we will stop you.”
