Bedel gains two honors

— Batesville High School graduate Elaine (Kops) Bedel has received two honors in the business world.

In 1989, she founded Bedel Financial Consulting Inc., Indianapolis, a wealth management firm providing fee-only financial planning  and investment management services for individuals, consulting services for corporate retirement plans and investment advisory for institutions and endowments.  The 16-employee firm ( actively manages more than $650 million in client investments.

Bedel Financial Consulting was recently recognized as one of the Top 25 Women-Owned RIAs (registered investment advisers) nationwide by, reported Bedel’s executive administrator Cassi Vanderpool. According to data from Cerulli Associates, a research firm specializing in the financial services industry, women made up less than 12 percent of all RIAs in 2012. That puts the Batesville native in an elite group refers to as “trailblazers.” The company owner and president is the only Hoosier to land on the site’s prestigious list.

An RIA provides investment management as well as other financial services and is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission. To be recognized by, advisers had to own at least 25 percent of their firm, provide financial planning for individual clients and have a client list that could include no more than 50 percent institutional clients.

Now Bedel will be one of four honored as Junior Achievement of Central Indiana 2013 Business Hall of Fame Laureates Thursday, Feb. 21. Other laureates are Dr. Donald Brown, Interactive Intelligence co-founder and CEO; Albert Chen, Telamon Corp. chairman and CEO; and Rollin Dick, MH Equity Investors consultant.

The 25th anniversary black tie event, chaired by Forrest Lucas, Lucas Oil Products CEO, will be held at the Indiana Roof Ballroom, Indianapolis, starting at 6 p.m.

A reception will be followed by the dinner and 7 p.m. awards ceremony. Junior Achievement students will participate in the evening’s events, which will include introductions of the laureates and video presentations highlighting their many accomplishments.

Bedel received the Torchbearer Award from former Gov. Mitch Daniels and the Indiana Commission for Women in 2011.

She earned a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree with a mathematics major at Hanover College and a Master of Business Administration degree with finance emphasis at Butler University. Bedel also received the Certified Financial Planner designation from the College for Financial Planning.

Prior to founding her company, she was director of personal financial planning at Coopers and Lybrand and a vice president and trust officer at Indiana National Bank.
