Meyers Funeral Home relocates to new building

The Meyers family became involved in the funeral business in the early 1900s. Ed Ziere ran a funeral home in Batesville from his residence on North Park Avenue. He called upon Walter B. Meyers, Rodger Meyers’ grandfather, for the use of his horses and wagon to carry the caskets for funerals.

Walter, then a farmer, decided to attend mortuary school to earn his license. Walter and his wife, Lillie, continued the funeral business from their home on Columbus Avenue.

Over time, funeral customs began to change. Families preferred to have the services and visitation at the local funeral home, rather than their own residences. In the late 1930s, to accommodate these changes, Walter Meyers moved the business to his mother’s house at 500 W. Pearl St., where it stands today.

Walter and Lillie’s son, Nelson G. Meyers, graduated from mortuary school in 1949. Nelson and his wife, Margaret, eventually assumed operations of the funeral home and resided upstairs while raising their family.

After a tour of duty in the Navy from 1977-80, Rodger Meyers graduated from Mid-America College of Funeral Service, Louisville, Ky., in 1984 and joined his father. When Nelson retired in the early 1990s, Rodger took over the funeral business, continuing in the West Pearl Street location until now.

“Over the years the buildings may have changed, but one thing remains the same: It is still a respected, friendly, family-owned funeral home based on Batesville history and pride,” notes Taaron Meyers, Rodger’s wife. This third generation funeral business is the only one of its kind in the greater Batesville area. Meyers Funeral Home is a full-service funeral home and cremation service, now open at a new Batesville location, 1150 State Road 46 E.

Both Rodger and Taaron Meyers are actively involved in the business, making sure to provide quality service to bereaved families in this area and continuing their service at Jackman Kercheval Meyers Funeral Home, Harrison, Ohio.
