Hill-Rom workers aid Safe Passage clients

“Hill-Rom held an awesome team building event” Sept. 19 at the Hill-Rom Employee Center that benefitted Safe Passage, reports Donna Huffmaster, administrative assistant at the five-county domestic violence shelter.

During a one-and-a-half-hour session, 31 volunteers prepared and packed 30 meals under the guidance of Aramark workers for shelter and outreach clients. Huffmaster says, “Most of the meals are being distributed to our outreach clients to give the moms a break from cooking for a night.”

According to Hill-Rom Employee Center and community relations manager Mary Jon McCaig, Hill-Rom partnered with Aramark, the building’s food contractor, “to provide the best quality in food preparation and service. All food was precooked that day for the build and then frozen to ensure food safety for Safe Passage.”

The Hill-Rom employees also filled 120 individually wrapped decorated bags with trail mix and donated 300 nonperishable items, including Kroger gift cards, baby wipes, boxed macaroni and cheese, laundry soap, salad dressing, ketchup, paper napkins, Kleenex, canned chicken and tuna, mayonnaise, file folders and paper.

Huffmaster says, “We couldn’t believe the number of items they collected that were on our wish list in addition to the meals they donated.”

Because “Hill-Rom wanted to look into how to help more in the community,” McCaig contacted Safe Passage to understand its needs. She notes, “Safe Passage also has an impact on individuals outside the community that helps us reach out as well.”

The manager explains, “We are always looking into team building and employee engagement. We currently have several other projects underway that will impact this community, surrounding areas and international” locations.

Persons, groups and businesses that also would like to aid Safe Passage may contact Huffmaster at dhuffmaster@safepassageinc.org or 933-1990.
